Sailfish hunt the surface, which is exactly why kite fishing was built around this species — a struggling bait on top of the water, in full view, draws strikes that a bait fished deep never sees.
The fight matches the strike: sailfish are among the most acrobatic fish in blue water, tail-walking and jumping repeatedly before finally settling into a deep, dogged fight near the boat.
Where and When
Current edges, temperature breaks, and areas with concentrated baitfish hold sailfish seasonally. They’re often found in loose packs, moving with bait schools along the same edges that hold mahi and wahoo.
Tackle Class
20-30lb class with circle hooks required — non-circle hooks on sailfish lead to deep, often fatal hookups on a fish that’s typically released. Light tackle also makes the acrobatic fight worth the trip.
